Summer Farm Share Week 22 – Brussels Sprouts end season

Ohio Farm Share Summer Week 22 includes Brussels Sprouts, Acorn and Kobacha Squash Apples Onions Beets Broccolit and more

Summer Farm Share Week 22 ends the season with Brussels Sprouts. My favorite! I can’t believe we’ve been living off a farm share and tracking it for over a year. We start our second winter season with the farm share next week. This winter we’re experimenting with the Omnivore share, instead of the Vegetarian Pilot program we did last year.

I want to get away from buying our meat from the grocery to see how we feel concentrating on pasture raised. We’re eating less meat, but I want to see if we can be more Vegetarian for the winter. It makes sense to me because we eat so many soups and stews during the winter months. Chicken, beef and pork are only used to flavor the stews/soups, and not actually used in any great quantity. When we have a 4-6 ounce piece of protein on our plates at home, it’s usually fish.

Week 22 of our small summer Vegetarian farm share included (featured photo at the top of this post)…

Apples – quarter peck
Canned Peaches instead of Cabbage – I asked for a substitution this week since two family members are unable to eat veggies in the cabbage family. We’re having to adjust while two of them recover from illness.
Brussels Sprouts – I got these and my parents took the Kabocha/Buttercup squash.
Cider – 1/2 Gallon
Broccoli – I kept this and my parents got the Beets.
Acorn Squash – 2 = one for each of us!
Onion
Beets – my parents took these.
Squash – Kabocha or Buttercup – don’t know which one this is, but isn’t it pretty? My parents took it home to try.

My half of the share (above photo) and how we used it.

Apples – 1/2 of a quarter peck – delicious but I’m not eating them fast enough. Maybe it’s time for Apple Cobbler?
Brussels Sprouts – I’m ecstatic about these. LOVE roasted Brussels Sprouts.
Cider – 1/4 gallon – I’m glad we split this because this is just enough for the two of us.
Broccoli – this was used in two meals, steamed with a sliver of butter.
Acorn Squash – added to my counter pile waiting for a squash roasting day.
Onion – in the pantry, even though I use them weekly, they’re so big that they’re lasting longer than normal.

Extras (pictured with my half of the share)

Milk – 2% and Whole – I’m trying both this week as the whole milk is a little rich for me to have all week in my cereal, but I love it in my coffee!
Apple Butter with Cinnamon – I couldn’t resist trying this.

RESULTS (week of October 24, 2016)…

Our oldest son was in town this week for a couple days to enjoy the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Cavaliers success. We went out to eat several times with family, then Mr. Carnivore and I did a couple date nights out as well. I cooked some, but I didn’t exert myself. Plus, we found a lost kitty and that baby took some of our time to watch over him until we found him a foster home until his real family is found.

That’s the nice thing about this time of year. A lot of what we get in the share is storable like the squash.

I used up our frozen fish and kept things simple this week. One night I made some frozen pirogi with sauteed onions and peppers. Another night we had double veggies with our fish.

I hope to find time to roast some vegetables this week. The weather is going to be super nice so I may be tempted to be in the garden cleaning up and dreaming about next year instead. Luckily the squash will wait until next week if I can’t resist the pull of warmer-than-normal fall weather.

Can’t wait to start the first week of Winter Share next week!
