WOLF CREEK WIDOW by Penny Richards is an uplifting, beautiful book about recovery from abuse with a ray of hope. I’m so glad I chose it for this month’s TBR challenge of our favorite tropes. I’m not normally attracted to romances by most requested tropes, but I do love a good settlers story where pioneers work peacefully with Native Americans. This has that and so much more.
Why is this book in Dorine’s TBR? I had a Love Inspired Historical subscription with Harlequin, then canceled when I couldn’t keep up, so I have a huge pile to choose from. I’ve dreamed of someday writing inspirational romance, so a huge pile to read will tell me if they’re like my style. Luckily, it also met my western frontier romance craving with several books. This is the best one I’ve read so far.
What I loved most about this book is that it’s a complicated story. It’s detailed and takes its time with this couple’s relationship. But, there are very good reasons for the slower pace. Meg Thomerson needs assistance while she recovers from her injuries caused by her husband. To really twist things up, the man who helps her is none other than the man who killed her husband.
Did he want to kill him? Any half-decent man who knew what the husband did over and over to Meg would have those thoughts. But, what about a Christian man? Even in self-defense, can Ace reconcile with his maker for what he’s done? And what about Meg? Will she accept him as more than a friend?
WOLF CREEK WIDOW is a great emotive story. Halfway through the author made me cry with this couple’s individual pasts. When they realize how much they have in common, it’s so emotional. I don’t always like the way Christian romance is written, but this one puts my faith back into this sub-genre of romance. The Christian references go with the story and made me contemplate the characters’ dilemmas in comparison to my own.
Our hero, Ace, is unusual, as part Native American mixed with Irish – his Celtic storytelling, mixed with Christian faith and Native American practices, makes his story so intriguing. His gentleness with the heroine’s abused past is heartwarming. I wondered how they’d work it all out, which kept me reading. The town and other characters within the novel made me wonder about the rest of the WOLF CREEK series, so I’m anxious to get the previous books.
If you’re looking for Christian historical romance with an interesting plot and realistic faith dilemmas, then I recommend WOLF CREEK WIDOW. I know I’m anxious to read more by Penny Richards because I like her style of a faith-infused romance.
