The Zest Quest

REVIEW: Kick off 2020 with Long Way Gone

LONG WAY GONE by Charles Martin brings the story of the Prodigal Son to new heights. A roller coaster of emotions, it’s filled with surprises and lessons we all need to heal.

Cooper is one of the best lead characters I’ve read. I loved his heart. He wasn’t perfect, and sometimes he was selfish. That’s what made his story realistic and relatable.

The lessons the author expounds upon at the end will move anyone who loves to interpret the Bible. For me, it left me with a sense of peace.

I loved that this story centers on a family of tent revivalists. Their experiences and methods are fascinating. I really enjoyed the unexpected characters, and where they led in the end. Also, this has a nice love story filtered in a mystery as the characters’ pasts are revealed.

Charles Martin is fast becoming my favorite spiritual storyteller. If you’ve never enjoyed Christian fiction in the past, I highly recommend you try this book. If you love music, especially spiritual songs, this book will sing to you through these musicians’ stories.

This author is one of the most gifted, emotive and faith-instilling writers I’ve ever experienced. So emotional and uplifting at the same time. It takes all I have in me to stop reading long enough to do real life. Absorbing!

I cried like a baby when the known artist joins an old friend and the residents of a nursing home in a medley of hymns. One of best written scenes I’ve ever experienced. So tender. So broken. So uplifting. I could hear the music and feel the performance to my toes.

It’s quite moving. So much so, I wanted to sing with them. Somehow, I feel like my spiritual singing in the future will benefit from the words spoken about the craft within this novel. If nothing else, I will feel the message more from each song.

This book was the perfect book club pick and I can’t wait for our discussion. There is a lot to attract many different readers. First, it’s all about music, the music industry and the performers. I’ve read a lot of these types of novels and this has the most accurate, true-to-life feel to it. Then there’s the people element with characters you’ll want to root for. All ages and all income levels, so you’re sure to relate to one of them. The places visited are realistic and well-drawn. It’s not preachy, but the message is clear and unforgettable.

If you need a kick off for 2020, read LONG WAY GONE and start your own spiritual journey. Highly recommend!
