The Zest Quest

Pathways – where does Your backroad go?

I have always had an affinity for backroads,  especially if they wind or crest so that you don’t quite know where you’re going until you get there. They call to me so much that our sons started calling me “backroads” because no one is ever sure when I’ll veer off on one. My husband knows that if I’m driving, we’re surely going to take a backroad at some point and the conversation usually goes something like this…

Me: “Hmmmm. I wonder if I take this road if it will shortcut us over there.”

Husband: “You know what happened the last time we did that.”

Me: “Yes, but this time it looks like it really goes over there.”

Husband: “Do we have enough gas?”

Me: “Well, no, that’s why I want to go over there. To get to that gas station without going through all that traffic.”

Of course, this usually happens in some mountainous area like West Virginia where the backroad leads us on an adventure here and there, but no where near where we had intended to go. It’s probably why I love West Virginia so much because I can always find a beautiful place nestled within those backroads that I wouldn’t have found had I stayed on the path intended.

Roads and pathways can mean many things, especially if you have a plan. But if you don’t have a plan and just a sense of adventure, do you ever wonder, where does that road go? Probably much like wondering about where our choices will take us in life. We never really know precisely what’s going to happen. Especially when there’s a fork in the road and you have more than one choice. How do you choose which one? Instinct? Process of elimination? Eeny Meeny Miny Mo?

I hope that this week you travel a road just because it’s there and beckons to you. Let me know where your road goes and I’ll tell you about mine!
